Edmund Naumann's principal work (1885) was introduced and discussed, for the first time, by the present author (Tanimoto, 1978). Examining a series of Naumann's papers, it was made clear that except his main paper (Naumann, 1885) the following seven articles are very important for tracing the vicissitude of his geological theory: (1) "Ueber Erdbeben und Vulcanausbrueche in Japan" (1878) (2) "Ueber den geologischen Bau der japanischen Insein" (1885) (3) "Ueber die Geologie Japans" (1885) (4) "Uber meine topographische und geologische Landesaufnahme Japans" (1886) (5) "Die japanische Inselwelt" (1887) (6) "The Physical Geography of Japan, with Remarks on the People" (1887) (7) Die Erscheinungen des Erdmagnetismus in ihrer Abhangigkeit vom Bau der Erdrinde (1887) In the article (1), two important conceptions, "Bruchregion" and "Idzureihe", were proposed from the viewpoint of "Gebirgssystem" and "Eruptionsspalte". The most important with respect to the articles (2) and (3) is that immediately after his main paper he modified his conception in such a way that "grosser Querspalte" is older than "grosse Longitudinaispalte". Although the article (4) has so far been thought to be the first to name "Fossa magna", the articles (5) and (6) were written earlier than the article (4) and published later. It can, at least, be said that from Oct. 1885 to Apr. 1886, "grosser Graben" was replaced with the Latin "Fossa magna". Since the article (7), the Naumann's geological theory has not been changed at all.
