Eduard Suess (1831-1914) was born in London and went to Prague in 1834. In Vienna he studied extensively the Alpine geology from about 1850 to his death. He was famous for his great work Des Antlitz der Erde (1883-1909). In the present paper, an effort was made to investigate critically the Suess's geotectonic way of thinking based on his work Die Entstehung der Alpen (1875) which includes many of his governing ideas in embryonic form, for the purpose of considering, his possible effect on the Naumann's and Harada's geotectonic history of Japanese Islands with which the author dealt previously.
