The fretting corrosion behavior of Au-plated contacts is studied at various current loads of 10, 100, 500 and 1000mA. The typical characteristics of the change in contact resistance with fretting cycles are investigated. The fretted surface is examined using scanning electron microscope and energy dispersive analysis of X-ray to assess the surface morphology, extent of oxidation and elemental distribution across the fretted zone. The degradation of contacts at different values of current is explained with reference to the ability of current to melt metal and breakdown oxide films. With larger amount of molten metal and area conducting current, the contacts at higher current load delay the time to reach failure, keep a relatively low contact resistance but surfer a severe fluctuation in contact resistance. The observed surface morphology reveals five typical regions within the fretted zone.
