The purpose of the study described in this paper is to make clear, for the study's subjects of regular employees working at second-tier companies (those with 500 or more but less than 5,000 employees) , first, their thoughts about work in their current workplace and second, what are some topics regarding human-resources management in such workplaces. On this subject, according to a survey (2005) by the Japan Institute for Labour Policy and Training (JILPT), when 1,793 of 8,000 men and women aged 20-65 from across Japan were asked their reasons for choosing their current form of employment, after the most common answer of earning stable income and the second most common answer of working as a regular employee, factors of internal motivation such as the ability to do the work they wanted to do were ranked highly. A review of previous studies on this subject shows that many studies have looked at the types of factors in employees' job satisfaction. However, few studies have, like this paper, analyzed through fact-finding surveys the degree to which regular employees at second-tier companies are satisfied or unsatisfied with their own jobs and made related topics of human-resources management clear. This point is the research question of this paper. For this reason, the purposes of this paper are (i) to identify what kinds of factors are involved in job satisfaction, from previous surveys, and (ii) based on this, to make topics in human-resources management clear through identifying potential variables (factors) that cannot be measured using surveys.
