Anatomical studies on stem and petiol of Aquilaria malaccensis Lam. collected in Bukit-timah district in Singapore showed that the vascular bundle of the stem was bicollateral, that a number of characteristic parenchymas were in the wood part of the stem, and that the parenchyma in xylem was a kind of phloem containing the elements of sieve tissues, i.e., sieve fiber, sieve cell, sieve tube and parenchyma. The cell wall of the medullary ray cells was ligneous in xylem but not in parenchyma. The medullary ray cells are arranged to form a continuous line through the phloem in xylem. Accordingly the phloem in xylem may be considered as a secondary tissue differentiated from the cambium as the usual secondary vascular bundle. In petiol and young branch of Aquilaria malaccensis Lam. the bascular bundle was bicollateral, and there was no differentiation of the phloem in xylem.
