Substance-I which had been obtained in our laboratory from the sugar component of the seeds of Pharbitis Nil CHOISY and regarded as a glycosidic acid potassium salt was found to be an impure oligosaccharide. It was purified to give colorless needles, mp 124°, [α]^<20>_D+107. 5° and identified as planteose, 6-O-α-D-galactopyranosyl-β-D-fructofuranosyl-α-D-glucopyranoside. Kromer's pharbitose is likely to be planteose and not to be a biose as he reported.
