1 Attempting to find any simpler and more accurate method to identify Japanese and Chinese Coptis roots, the authors have found that it was easily done by applying the water Capillary Images. 2 The difference between Chinese and Japanese Coptis roots can be recognized by each special characteristics of the Capillary Images of them under the ordinal lights and filtered ultra violet rays. 3 Because of the fact that amounts of Berberine alkaloids, which vary on account of the differences of the localities and the kinds of the mother plants of the roots are to be recognized on the β curves, the authors exajind the value of m and n' of the Berberine curves of the roots, and the Rb (The coefficient of m of the Berberine curve by m of the methylene blue curve) This methylene blue water capillary Images are prepared at the same time under the same condition as the roots are done. 4 Conclusione: A Japanese Coptis roots nonβ-(bB) L Chinese nonβ-(1G) L That is the non β zone of the Images of Japanese roots are blight blue but these of Chinese are light green, observed under., the filtered ultra violet rays. B Japanese (original ones in the market) 0.8<Rb≤1.0 Japanese (dried at 80C 30min) ones 0.9<Rb≤1.2 Chinese (original ones in the market) 1.2>Rb≥1.0 (one case excepted) Chinese (dried at 80C 30min) ones 1.3>Rb≥1.2 (one case excepted) In general, the Chinese roots are bigger than those of the Japanese. Thus they can be identified each other by comparin A and B
