The complete amino acid sequence of [2Fe-2S] ferredcxin from Capsicum annuum was determined by the automated Edman degradation of the entire S-carboxymethylated (Cm-) protein and of the tryptic peptides. The ferredoxin of this species exhibited 16-19 differences in the amino acid sequence, when compared with the ferredoxins of Datura stramonium, D. metel, D. arborea, Physalis alkekengi var. francheti, and Nicotiana tahacum whereas only 8-10 differences were observed among the ferredoxins of the three genera, Datura, Physalis, and Nicotiana. This suggests that the genus Capsicum is more distantly related taxonomically to these three genera.
