Growth and Tannin Accumulation of Geranium thunbergii SIEB. et ZUCC. under Different Light Regimes

The effects of heavy shading and short-day treatment on the growth and tannin accumulation of Geranium thunbergii were examined in July and October. Heavy shading for one month immediately before harvest significantly decreased the dry weights of aerial parts and roots, and stimulated the elongation of internodes of the plant. One month heavy shading followed by one month of natural environment before harvest slightly increased the dry weight of aerial parts over that of the control plants. The plants which received two month short-day treatment before harvest in October were characterized by the compact plant canopies and increased pod number. Tannin accumulation in leaf blades was decreased by one month heavy shading before harvest. One month heavy shading followed by one month natural conditions before harvest did not affect the tannin concentration in leaf blades in July, but caused a decrease in them in October. Short-day treatment seemed to lead to higher tannin accumulation both in leaf blades and in stems than other treatments.
