• The effects of 10, 20, or 30 day waterlogging on the growth of Geranium thunbergii were examined in July-August. Waterlogging inhibited the increases in the dry weight of aerial parts, rapidly decreased the chlorophyll concentration and caused leaf chlorosis and necrosis; so that the dry weight of dead aerial parts on day 30 of waterlogging was 3.6 times that of the control plants. When 30 day waterlogging was given, the weights of leaf blades and petioles decreased on day 10, and reached the lowest levels on day 20. However, the concentration of tannin in the leaf blades increased by the 10 day waterlogging whereas that in stems was decreased by the waterlogging.
