The effects of water stress, i.e. waterlogging and drought, on the growth of Geranium thunbergii and its geraniin content were investigated at different growth stages, by imposing one month water stress immediately before harvest in May-November. Plants were in full bloom in August-September. In control plants, the dry weight of aerial parts reached the maximum in September and the geraniin concentration profiles had two peaks, in July and in September. Both types of water stress, especially when given at the flowering stage, decreased the plant yield. The water stress tended to decrease the chlorophyll concentration, but did not affect the concentration of geraniin in the plants: waterlogging tended to increase its geraniin content.
