The effects of short-day time treatment on the growth and tannin concentration of the medicinal plant Geranium thunbergii were studied by growing the plant under the 8-h day natural light conditions and in the natural day time length conditions from April to June. One month or longer short-day time treatment decreased the dry weights of leaf blades, petioles, and stems, but increased the dry root weight. Plants grown under the short-day time conditions had shorter internodes on the longest stem than those of the control plants. The tannin concentrations in leaf blades were lower than that in the control in the first month (from April to May) of the short-day time treatment but was higher than the control afterwards. Tannin concentrations are sensitive to the timing of the short-day time treatment and to the length of the photoperiod.
