Cistanche tubulosa Wight., an obligate phanerogamic root parasite, used in traditional Chinese medicine was cultured to investigate the rate of parasitization under various environmental conditions, the growth of the parasites, their phenylethanoid glycoside contents and the structure of hostparasite interface. The results were as follows: (1) When seeded in July, C. tubulosa parasitized Suaeda fruticosa at a high rate. (2) More than 50% of the parasitizations occurred at a soil depth of 30 to 40 cm. (3) The rate of successful parasitization was improved by inclining the pipe in which the host was grown. (4) Parasitization occurred within 2 months of seeding. The subterranean portion grew rapidly and the blooming started in about 5 months after seeding. (5) The amounts of phenylethanoid glycosides in the cultivated parasites was larger than those in natural parasites collected in Pakistan. The glycoside content decreased as the parasites grew older. (6) There was no clear demarcation line between the tissues of the host root and those of the haustorium. Direct connections in tracheids were observed between the roots of the two. (7) One C. tubulosa parasitized Tamarix chinensis, a species not reported previously as a host.
