Four flavonoid compounds, avicularin (1), hyperin (2), quercitrin (3) and taxillusin (4), were isolated from the leaves of a parasite plant, Taxillus kaempferi, and three catechin compounds, (+)-catechin (6), procyanidins B-1 (7) and B-3 (8) from the stems of the plant. Since flavans and flavanones turn reddish purple upon reaction with the Ehrlich's reagent and other flavones do not, the catechin contents of plants can be determined by using this reaction on thin layer chromatography (TLC) plates and a TLC-chromatoscanner. By this method, the catechin contents in the leaves, fruits and stems of T. kaempferi and of its host plant, Pinus thunbergii were examined. The catechin content of fresh stems of T. kaempferi (T-B_3) was about 0.6%, which was about three times that of P. thunbergii. However, whether the marked accumulation of catechins in T. kaempferi is related directly to the catechin production in the host, P. thunbergii remains unknown.
