≫Jojin-Ajari-Haha-no-Shu≪ was written in the middle of the 11th century by anonymous mother of Jojin, an acarya, a high-priest in an esoteric sect of Buddhism, which impresses us by the vivid description of her bitter grief at parting from her son going abroad to Sung, or China at the era. It is a diary rather than a collection of poetical works in spite of its title ≫Shu≪ which means ordinary a collection of poems (Ka-Shu) in the traditional Japanese sense. As for Jojin himself, he became reputed for his religious discipline and miraculous works, such as causing rainfall and so on, however, his mother is supposed to have dided by that time, and then afterwards he also dided there never to return home. As this ≫Jojin-Ajari-Haha-no-Shu≪ is his mother's so may well be the ≫San-Tendai-Godaisan-Ki≪ to him. Two manuscripts are known for this Diary, one is the Royal Archive in Kunai-cho (Shoryo-bu) and the other treasured privately among the Reizeis (a family). I revised the text chiefly on the former, while referring to the letter as possible. Even no less efforts were made to give indices to the wakas, those 31-syllabic Japanese poems; to the chokas, i. e. the longer ones, as well as to their phrases, to their epithetic stock-adjectives (makura-kotoba) and the rhetorical fun words of double meanings (kake-kotoba) and to the other normal words.
