≫San-Tendai-Godaisan-Ki≪ is a diary of travel description which had been kept by Jojin (1011-1081 A. D.) from the era of Enkyu 4th (1071 A. D.) (at this time he went abroad to Sung, China at the era) until June the next Year, during which he had made his pilgrimage to Tendaisan and Godaisan, respectively relgions sacred places. It enables us to get acquainted with, foremost of all, his own firm belief in Buddhism, and other instructive things such as marine traffic conditions at the era, some aspects of their customs and civilization based on Buddhism; and it also reminds us of his mother's work, ≫Jojin-Azari-Haha-no-Shu≪, a sorrowful description of her bitter grief at parting from her son going abroad. At present there are four kinds of manuscripts for this diary; out of them, the first, Tofukuji edition of Kyoto and the second, Seikado-bunko edition (Seikado Library) are in complete volumes, while the third, Mudoji edition of Hieizan and the last, Sairaiji edition of Tsu City are, respectively, only the first volume and the second volume remained in odd volumes. I revised the text chiefly on the first edition, Tofukuji edition, while referring to the other three editions, further more, to the two other printed editions called Shiseki-shuran (historical documents) and Dainihon Bukkyo Zensho (Total edition of Buddhist writings in Japan), in the latter of which I found some copies of the original manuscripts now missing and referred to them.
