Since awareness is said to be indispensable for language acquisition, many studies have been conducted to examine the effect of instructional interventions on awareness. These studies, however, have unclear points in terms of the effect of such interventions on first awareness and on the process after first awareness. This study focuses on vocabulary learning and, especially, the effect of awareness enhancement on retention, by making the degree and timing of first awareness similar among subject groups and in each group. I began by positing two hypotheses: 1. More words can be retained by enhanced awareness than simple awareness 2. Awareness enhancement with output can cause more retention than with input The study was then conducted with 178 undergraduates, using nine target words. The results partially supported the hypotheses, suggesting that awareness enhancement after first awareness has a better effect than simple awareness, and that awareness enhancement with higher involvement can be more effective than simple awareness in both the long and the short term.
