The purpose of this paper is to introduce my Kanji-Hatsuon Dictionary and to show its significance in the instruction of computer-based Japanese reading and writing. I have been teaching Japanese as a second language at the university level, emphasizing computer-assisted language learning. I have been using an idea processor, Acta7 for the reading and writing course. In Japanese reading and writing, a knowledge of kanji is essential. When students come across unknown kanji, they need to know its pronunciation to consult a dictionary. This is because Japanese dictionaries (kokugo-jiten) are complied in the kana phonological order. In order to assist students with kanji, I have created a program that gives students kanji pronunciation. The Kanji-Hatsuon Dictionary, a HyperCard stack, teaches kanji pronunciation with both hiragana and recorded sounds. In this paper, first the reading and writing instruction of Japanese as a second language will be introduced in order to clarify the background and show the need for the Kanji-Hatsuon Dictionary. Then, the Kanji-Hatsun Dictionary will be explained in detail. Feedback from students and some problems to be solved in the future will be also dicussed at the end.
