This study aims to examine the effects of the use of films and/or news to improve listening ability for Japanese advanced learners of English. In Study 1, the effects of using only films, using only news, and of using a combination of both films and news on EFL students' progress in listening comprehension were compared empirically according to the learners' proficiency levels. In Study 2, to obtain supporting evidence for the Study 1, the students' subjective reactions towards the three patterns of instruction were examined by their listening abilities. The results indicated that 1) it seems that the combination of news and film materials would be more effective than only news or only film materials for advanced students' listening practice, and 2) from the students' reaction it may be said that the combined use of news and films would be effective for the mid and low level students as well as high level students.
