Purpose: To improve the technical and practical expertise of practicing midwives, it was felt essential that we learn from the experiences of a midwife who had practiced her skills over a long time in a local community, covering a period from before to after World War II. Materials and Methods: Our research was conducted through 9 semi-formal interviews of a 92-year-old former midwife (Ms. Horinishi) regarding her activities and care methods as a midwife over several decades. Results: Ms. Horinishi obtained her official status as a midwife in 1934 (Showa 9), and started working as a midwife for assisting in home delivery, together with her mother-in-law, in Showa 13(1938), after marrying into a family with a history of midwifery. While consulting with various types of families during periodic maternity counseling, Ms. Horinishi paid special attention to their backgrounds and lifestyles. When she considered it necessary (when she noted problems within the family), she sought out appropriate persons for advice on how to minimize the mental stress of the expectant mother. In the childbirth process, to facilitate the delivery of the baby, Ms. Horinishi would extend the perineum muscle of the delivering mother, using her second and third fingers that she had wrapped with cotton and soaked in olive oil. When the baby's head emerged, she would attempt to wait for the subsequent appearance of the shoulders at the next labor contraction with the turning of the baby for a smooth delivery. Successful deliveries were the result of the collaboration between the midwife, the expectant mother and family members. Conclusion: The study and sharing of methods and professional spirit of former midwives will enrich the experience of current midwives, and will serve to remind them that they are specialized professionals.
