Route failures occur frequently in a general ad hoc network. Existing route recovery methods lead to long latency and large control overhead. In this paper, we propose a novel route recovery method based on potential relay nodes near the broken route to realize quick recovery with small overhead. There is no broadcast of any control packet in our proposal. Using promiscuous mode, relay nodes get ready to bypass packets when they overhear a possible broken route; while the relay behavior starts only when some node on the route confirms that the route actually breaks. Simulation results demonstrate that adding the proposed relay recovery method to AODV significantly shortens the time delay and reduces the control overhead in the route repairing process.
