Some Results of Reduction Gear Endurance Strength Tests by Means of a Large Test Rig(Collected Papers Published by Staff of Ship Research Institute at Societies and Institutions in 1973)

The marine reduction gears, for which a high reliability for strength, have come to be designed to meet considerably high load conditions in recent years owing to the improving the machining technique and or the materials. It is, however, very interesting and important to know exactly the endurance limits on the strength. Such being the case, in order to obtain data as close to the actual gears as possible, we carried out endurance tests on some large size models of marine reduction gears, by means of large-scale gear testing machine having center distance of 720 mm. This paper gives the results of the endurance tests performed on two tempered reduction gears now in use for high-power marine steam turbines and on nitrided and carburized hardened gears which will be used for high-power geared diesel engines. This paper also introduces the 3,200mm-diameter nitrided gear wheel which was manufactured experimentally in relation to the above-stated endurance test on hardened gears.
