Experimental study was carried out on the dynamic effect of tank free surface on ship motion in waves. Free surface effect can be characterized by the combination of following three parameters. Ratio of GM loss GG_0/GM Ratio of natural periods of ship and tank T_t/Tφ Damping coefficient for liquid motion K_t Experimental data were obtained in the range of GG_0/GM=0.1〜0.5 and T_t/Tφ=0.2〜1.0, with K_t values. They were on anti-rolling tanks, slack loaded tanks of liquified gas carrier, shperical and rectangular tank of filling ratio from 30% to 98%, and cargo holds which were partially filled by sea water in very rare case. Motion prediction method was prepared for a ship equipped with multiple U-tanks and its accuracy was confirmed by the experiment on anti-rolling tanks. Then, for the purpose of easy and practical evaluation of dynamic effect of the free surface, U-tank approximation were applied to a spherical tank and rectangular one, and it was found tank U-tank approxmation give a fairly good agreement with experiment. For the case of slack loaded tank of liquified gas carrier, rolling motion is enlarged in the short period range near tank natural period by the effect of free surface. Therefore, in the estimation of ship motion to be used in bench test for tank sloshing load measurement, it is recommended to check the extent of the effect of the coupled motion of ship and tank liquid.
