In 1975, a 400,000 DWT oil tanker with 4-longitudinal-bulkhead system was built for the first time in MHI NAGASAKI shipyard. The 4-longitudinal-bulkhead system was adopted for two reasons: One reason was that the 4-longitudinal-bulkhead system was suitable for processing in MHI NAGASAKI shipyard KOYAGI plant where large panel block assemblies could be produced; the other was that the scantling of the 400,000 DWT oil tanker, a U.L.C.C., was so similar to that of the V.L.C.C. and the safety factor could be estimated from our past experiense with the V.L.C.C.'s. And, one of the ship's structural features was that the annular transverse frame next to the transverse bulkhead reinforced with horizontal girders was made strutless. Figure 1 shows the cargo-tank arrangement, and Fig. 2 the typical construction. Since the 4-longitudinal-bulkhead system was the first experience for us, in the initial design stage the computer system "SASMIT" developed by MHI was applied in the structural analysis. The analysis by SASMIT can be summarized as follows. (Step-1) longitudinal strength calculation. (Step-2) 3 dimemsional panel-frame analysis. (Step-3) 2 dimemsional F.E.M. calculation. Then, for evaluation of the accuracy of the calculation method, we carried out the ship board experiments under different loaded conditions. In the experimemts, deflection of ship's main hull and local members, as well as the stress distribution in transverse framing and horizontal girder systems were measured. And the structural analysis by SASMIT was performed under the identically simulated loaded-conditions. Figure 8 shows the deflections of hull, and Fig. 10〜12 the stress distributions. From the results of the experimental and theoretical analyses, the following can be said. (1) The results of theoretical analysis are in fairly good agreement with those of experiment. The SASMIT offers a high degree of accuracy for practical application. (2) The 400,000 DWT oil tanker has enough structural strength with the strutless annular transverse framing.
