As is generally known, 'Bavarian Gentians' and 'Ship of Death' in Last Poems are written when Lawrence began thinking about the possibility of his death. In 1927, because of a hemorrhage due to tubercurosis kept him from attending the London performance of his own work David a play. Last Poems was written around a year before D.H. Lawrence's death. That was in September 1929. While writing these poems, Lawrence seemed to have a strong awareness of his own death, trying to delve into the meaning of the lives of the modern people. Even though Lawrence wandered England and the Mediterranean places until his last days, he could not decide which place he wanted to make his lifelong stay. He might not have wanted to stay in one point. It is possible that he was not a geographically oriented person but a historically oriented one. Perhaps it seems that even Lawrence with his strong character, might not have been able to acknowledge the idea of his own worldly disappearance.
