The first book in the Harry Potter series, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone was published in 1997 by the London publishing company, Bloomsbury. The story immediately fascinated British children, and its reputation spread around the world. In translation it came to be welcomed not only by children all over the world, but by adults as well. In 1998, because of the book's world-wide popularity, an American publishing company, Scholastic revised it into American English, changed its title to Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, and published it in the United States. Although the American edition was launched after thoroughgoing preparations lasting about a year, its reputation did not match the publisher's expectations. In an article, "Harry Potter, Minus a Certain Flavour", which appeared in The New York Times on 10th of July, 2000, as we can see from the article's title, newswriter Peter H. Gleick severely criticised the American edition and evoked many readers' sympathy when he intentionally used the British spelling `Flavour' instead of the American `Flavor'. This article also became popular on the Internet because so many Americans felt the American edition was insulting their intelligence. Besides the title change, Mr Gleick pointed out that some words in the American edition have been completely changed. A detailed reading of the US and UK editions, comparing paragraphs, sentences, phrases and words revealed even more differences than expected. In this paper, I focus on such differences and discuss whether an Americanized edition was really needed. By way of comparison, I also refer to The Good Earth by Pearl Buck. The author expressed her opinion in a private letter expressing about changes made to the British edition of the book.
