Japanese clocks represent a leading technology of the Edo period in Japan, however, serious research has yet to be conducted in the area of their history and development. One paticular reason for this is due to the absence of production date inscriptions and as well as the lack of any signs that identify the maker on these clocks. The authers of this articl supposed that some of Japanese clocks which have similar characteristics in the outward designs and mechanisms and have production date or maker sign inscriptions were produced by makers within the same family line. Based on the fact that two of these clocks have a specific maker sign, we arrived at a conclusion that all of these clocks were produced by generations of makers who pioneered Japanese clock making calling themselves, collectively, Sukezaemon Tsuda, and had served the Tokugawa family of Owari Domain from 1598 until the end of Edo period. In particular, the examination of a lantern clock with the double foriot, which was made by Nobutsura Sukezaemon Tsuda in 1688, provided vital information about the historical development of Japanese clocks, as well as the origin of double foriot mechanism in Japan and its inventor.
