This article consists of two parts. The first part is a report on a research concerning about the relative success on the academic performance at ICU among those students who were admitted directly from high schools to ICU, and those admitted one year after their graduation from high schools, and those admitted two or more years after their graduation from high schools. The study was done with 115 graduates of the year of 1958 and 109 graduates of the year of 1959. No significant difference was found among the average grades of the three groups of both years. This result is rather different from ones found in other colleges. Why this could occur in ICU? The author ascribes this to the differences in the nature of entrance examination employed. While Achievement Tests are heavily used in other colleges, no such test is administered in ICU. Instead, her entrance examination is composed of a Scholastic Aptitude Test and Learning Ability Tests. Achievement Tests tend to examine the amount of knowledge the students collected, and the measures of the amount of knowledge have little power of predicting their future success. The Scholastic Aptitude Test and Learning Ability Tests, on the other hand, measure the abilities functioning. Therefore, in college where Achievement Tests are mainly used, it is quite conceivable that the grades of students who entered to the colleges one or more years after their graduation will be dropt in later years. The second part of this paper tries to make some suggestions on the general policies for improving the method of college entrance examination in Japan. Nowadays, practically no datum other than the results of entrance examination provided by each college is taken into account for student admission. Even leading colleges very often neglect to examine the high school records of applicants. Furthermore, there is no systematic coordination between colleges, as to the examination. There are considerable waste of energy in the side of colleges and also the waste of energy, time and money in the side of students. We are strongly urged to reform this unfortunate situation. In this respect the system of College Entrance Examination Board in U.S.A. should be studied and practiced in Japan. Systematic coordination among colleges and high schools and autonomy of each college should be equally emphasized.
