The author has had extensive experience in carrying out and evaluating distance education projects. In this paper he discusses a series of projects he has been involved in over a twenty-year time period in Japan. Many of these were centered at the Tokyo Institute of Technology, which has carried out a varied assortment of pilot programs in distance education, using fiber optic cable between its two campuses. This same university also used an international satellite to conduct distance classes between its Tokyo campus and the Harvard Business School in Cambridge U. S. A.
