Physiognomy and plant communities of Mt Kinabalu, Borneo were observed in January 1973. Plants of the region over 3500m in altitude were very rare and tiny in comparison with those of the region lower than 3500m in altitude. Van Steenis (1964) showed that the altitudinal zones of the mountain were distinguished between three zones, the foothill zone up to ca 1000m, the mountain zone from ca 1000m to 2500m, and the sub-alpine zone from ca 2500m to the summit. However, as mentioned above, in the region over 3500m plant communities are very scarce and form patches. Here is emphasized that the region from 3500m to the summit should be categorized to the alpine zone. The altitudinal zones of Mt Kinabalu are as follows; the foothill zone up to ca 1000m the mountain zone ca 1000m to ca 2500m the sub-alpine zone ca 2500m to ca 3500m the alpine zone ca 3500m to the summit.
