Density of terrestrial insects, soil Nematoda and enchytraeid worms, and density and biomass of large sized soil animals were investigated in Mt Shibutsu and Ozegahara moor, central Japan. Insect fauna at alpine zones of Mt Shibutsu was poor in comparison with that of Ozegahara moor. Number of insects collected by sweep nets at a creeping pine shrub was 162 per 5 minutes, and was about two times as much as that at an alpine meadow. Ratio of dipteran insects to all insects in percentage was about 70% at above two communities. On the other hand, ratio of Hemiptera to all insects was ca. 20% at the alpine meadow, and less than 1% at the creeping pine shrub. Population density of enchytraeid worms at an alpine meadow was estimated to 7520/m^2, and was the highest density at four communities, that is, alpine desert, alpine shrub, alpine meadow and coniferous forest of Mt Shibutsu. Density of the worms at the moor was higher than that at the communities of the mountain. Density of Nematoda at the moor was in general lower than that of the alpine meadow (515200/m^2) and the coniferous forest (374560/m^2). Density of large sized soil animals at the coniferous forest was 520/m^2, and was the highest. The densities of the animals were similar to each other in numbers at other three communities of Mt Shibutsu. The biomass of the animals, at the coniferous forest was 13.5 g wet wt/m^2, and the alpine meadow 5.0g wet wt/m^2. The biomass of the animal was lower than 1 g wet wt/m^2 at the creeping, pine shrub and the alpine desert. Some characteristics of invertebrates at alpine zones or high mountains were discussed ecologically.
