Production efficiency in natural populations and metabolism of large sized soil animals are concerned in this paper, with a short note on population energetics of animals. Production efficiency of animal populations is defined as P/A in percentage, where P is production and A is asssimilation per unit area and unit time in terms of energy. Production efficiency of three animal groups, i. e. insects, invertebrates excluding insects and vertebrates, is considered here. Productin efficiency of insect populations varied from 23% to 65%, and is relatively high. On the other hand, production efficiency of population for vertebrates, i. e, fishes, mammals arid birds, is almost less than 10%. Populations of invertebrates excluding insects show medium efficiency, being from 14% to 30%. Difference in production efficiency between these animal groups is due to body temperature, growth and life span of individuals, and structure of nooulations.
