The term 'internationalization' is openly and widely said in Japan in recent years. By the acceptance of workers and businessmen as well as tourists for a few years, foreigners have come to Japan increasingly year by year. But, when we see them, we cannot help noticing the differences between them in the skin color, the way of life as well as in the spoken languages. It's true that those aboved points have made us to have some prejudices and racial discrimination against them. By the way, the reasons because we Japanese are lacking on an international mind and find it difficult to go well with foreigners are found by the fact that Japan is an island and has had rare contacts with them. In addition, it goes without saying that Japan is a mono-cultural society and a single-nation state, excluding from some minorities. So, I'd like to pay special attention to British case in that Britain has become a multi-racial, cultural society in extreme short periods of the post-war though she is the same island and had had long histries of the mono-culture of Anglo-Saxons as Japan. Then, based on the Swann Report in 1985 which says Britain is a multicultural society, I'll study multicultural education in Britain. On the 1st chapter, I clarify the historical developments of muticultural Britain since the World War II. On the 2nd chapter, I clarify practices of multicultural antiracist education in schools and LEAs. On the 3rd chapter, I point out some problems in dealing with racism. Finally, I'll try to make clear how multicultural education will be developed and cope with racism, and build up social justice and equality in a multiracial society in the future.
