During the early twentieth century, many Japanese physicists went to Europe to study and work in famous centers like the Cavendish Laboratory at Cambridge, Ernest Rutherford's laboratory in Manchester, and Niels Bohr's Copenhagen Institute. The first part of the paper will examine the following questions: What was the purpose of Japanese physicists' overseas study and what did they learn?; Where did they go and how long did they stay?; How did their overseas study influence their careers in Japan and the development of the Japanese physics community? The second part of the paper will analyze Nishina Yoshio's seven and a half year stay in Europe, which was not only quite different from any other previous cases but also very successful. The conclusion will raise a broader question for future study: How much and in what way did Japanese physicists' overseas study contribute to the transfer of specific knowledge from the West to Japan or to the development of physics in Japan?
