Although it lasted only for around ten years, the Edwardian era can be regarded as an age characterized of its interest in the national identity. Many Edwardians, from the upper class to the working class, were constantly conscious of what Englishness was like in their circumstances. In other words, Britain's National identity faced crucial crisis then because of the coming Great War and much turbulence. Englishness as an object of study has long been discussed in various fields. This means that we cannot define it comprehensively. So in this paper, I will mainly focus on the emergence of national identity in the Edwardian Era. I also attach great importance to the relationship between English literature, English landscape and the notion of Englishness. How did English landscape inspire writers' mind? As its explanation, I need to draw on some explanation of English literature in same age. I take some of them: D.H. Lawrence, E.M. Forster and some others. Lastly, I refer to some aspects of Englishness in our age. These days the term "Britishness" is often used on media. What is the difference, between the two? This shows transition from Englishness to Britishness which weaves each other. As a good example, I have taken one discussion in The Prospect. It can be the exact example of Englishness as a flux notion. The notion of Englishness is constantly interpreted by many people and naturally the meaning varies according to each other.
