It may be very common to discuss the notion of ""Englishness"" as a theme for cultural study. It has been, so called, a timeless theme which interested many writers or scholars. Much has been said about the relations between Englishness and culture. So we tend to think that Englishness as a theme has been discussed fully and seems to be very old and commonplace. Nevertheless, Englishness as a theme still gives us a fresh sound. It is partly because it is closely connected with the definition of culture or national identity as English people. After all, Englishness as a theme for study has still extravagant springs. In this thesis, ""The Last Night of the Promenade Concert (=Proms)"" is focused as an important representation of Englishness. One of the main reasons why Proms has been taken as a good example of Englishness is its selection of tunes performed in Proms. They include ""Pomp and Circumstance"", ""Rule Britannia!"" and ""Jerusalem"". It is said that Proms can be characterized of emphasis on patriotism. Its scent may be not only a great charm but also danger to people. As a third issue, we think about Britishness as well as Englishness. The word ""Britishness"" is often used in many occasions. What is the difference between the two? The shift from Englishness to Britishness are considered in this paper We are concluded that thinking Englishness can be to understand that multicultural society and its originality are not simply incontingent but co-existant.
