Graetz and Autrum failed to find any proteolytic enzymes in extract of Hirudo gut wall, and Busig found that only one kind of bacteria was present, i.e., Pseudomonas hirudinis. Its properties were investigated by Busig et al who were concerned with showing that it was capable of digesting blood protein and transforming it into soluble nitrogenous compounds, Autrum and Graetz, Graetz and Autrum showed, however, that enzymes for initiating protein digestion were absent in Haemopis although there were several enzymes for the later stages of the process. If, following these reports, the leeches of Japan do not have any proteolytic enzymes and digestion deponds on bacterial decomposition, then this report concerns the presence or absence of proteolytic enzymes in leeches collected in Japan and Taiwan.
