This paper discusses the results of laboratory research begun 1961-3 at the Medical General Laboratory (406), United States Army Medical Command and susequently completed. Its objective is to elucidate how Japanese encephalitis virus is transmitted by examining one aspect of the cycle, the over-wintering physiology of mosquitos. In part I, two species of mosquitos, Culex pipiens and Culex tritaeniorynchus, were used. They were breed at varying temperatures and the changes in lipids observed. These results are given in Figure 1-10. In addition, they were compared with lipids of Culex pipiens collected field. Cf. Table 2. The following conclusions were drawm from the experimental data. (1) The mosquitos were in no way affected by environmental temperature, and theystored fat bodies that provided them with energy supplies in excess of what they required for activity and metabolism. Secondly, they do not intake glucides until the fat body lipids have been consumed and dry matter weight is less than 15%. (2) Lipids storage in low temperature environments reached 30-40% (of dry matter weight) in both species. Consequently, it can be inferred that the adults of both species are over-winter mosquitos. (3) At 4℃ Culex pipiens demonstrates the same changes in lipids as at higher temperatures. Culex tritaeniorhynchus, however, ceases to be able to feed and dies after' exhausting its lipids. It can feed, however, at temperatures in excess of 4℃. It can be inferred that both species are able to live through the winter in different locales. (4) As (1)-(3) indicate, the over-wintering of these mosquitos is neither diapose nor hibernation. It is thought to be a repetition of periods of activity and quiescence.
