The construction with when-clause (i.e. S_1 when S_2 construction) like the following example (1) can be open to the linear interpretation under a certain condition. (1) I was playing chess with a traveling salesman that night when I heard the drum in the garden. In this paper, I should like to reconsider from the viewpoint of literary pragmatics when the linear interpretation becomes possible. As the procedure, I first show which kind of occurrence patterns the S_1 when S_2 construction presents. Second I attempt to consider what type of narrative modes each of the S_1 when S_2 constructions indicate, and then examine what kind of semantic patterns they make up. Finally I reveal that 'dangling participle + main clause' and the S_1 when S_2 construction form a continuum in the mode of expression.
