Ikegam (2000) has shown from the perspective of cognitive linguistics that the speaker verbalizes the situation on the basis of his or her two ways of construing it, an objective construal and a subjective construal. And he points out that these two ways of construing the situation are natutral as the cognitive activity of humans in general and function universally beyond a language difference. However, he indicates that the speaker of Japanese, in comparison with Western languages, has a strong tendency toward construing subejectively. In this paper, I show that the speaker's tendency of construing the situation in ordinary language of Japanese and English as above mentioned can be also seen in the narrator or character in narratives by focusing on the speech acts of narrator or character and specific linguistic expressions such as personal pronoun, proper name or past-tense.
