Chafe (1994) discusses certain important ways in which consciousness and language interact, on a variety of texts ranging from naturally produced speech to writing. What is deserving of special mention there is that literary devices should be understood within a broader picture of consciousness as a whole, but not as narrowly conceived theories of literary scholars. One more important thing is that a promising clue can be provided to identify the border line between fiction and nonfiction. So, in this paper, on the basis of Chafe (1994), I first show that the arguing point propounded by Yamaoka (2000) - we need to consider both 'who sees?' and 'who speaks?' together in investigating narrational modes or the raison d'etre of narrative sentences - is valid from a whole picture of consciousness. Next I reveal that the clue to identify the boundary between fiction and nonfiction is concerned with the presence of displaced immediacy of the represented consciousness. And finally I suggest that the evidence of its presence can be provided by finding out linguistic expressions referring to the experiencing self.
