The mechanism of blade excitation during surge of a high pressure ratio high mass flow centrifugal compressor has been investigated to evaluate the danger of blade failure due to this aerodynamic phenomenon. This was accomphlished experimentally by means of blade vibration and simultaneous unsteady pressure measurements to study the interactions between flow and blade vibration. While earlier results showed rotating stall effects as the dominating excitation source during a surge cycle a more detailed analysis of the corresponding flow characteristics is presented showing periodic as well as non-periodic blade excitation with its occurrence depending on the rotational speed of the impeller. The contribution of important results of an investigation conducted by means of an oil pattern visualization method enables an improved interpretation of the flow behavior during surge and its dangerous excitation effect to thin blades of highly loaded impellers.
