The occurrence of a simultaneous forward and backward flow in the impeller channel could be recognized as the characteristic flow behavior in a rotating stall cell as described in Part I of this work. A theory concerning the nature and the origin of rotating stall on centrifugal compressors was established and described in Part II. This theory is explained by using an analogy between the vortex flow involved in rotating stall of impellers and meteorological vortex system involved in the weather of the midlatitude of the earth. It is shown that rotating stall incorporates a flow pattern of Rossby waves and Karman vortex street-quite similar to conditions of our weather system-travelling around the circumference of the impeller and renewing from blade channel to blade channel under the control of the instability behavior of the Rossby waves.
