The theory expanded by Adamson, Messiter and Richey in the study for two-dimensional transonic nozzle flows is applied to the case of axially symmetric flow. The methods of matched asymptotic expansions are used to analyse the flow which changes from subsonic flow upstream to supersonic flow downstream of the throat with continuous velocity. When an outer solution, which may not be uniformly valied as the throat is approached, is matched with an inner similarity solution which satisfies the transonic small disturbance equation in a small region at the throat, conditions on the outer solution are obtained. Using the results of matching, it is also shown that the second order inner solution are able to derive systematically for a specified wall shape from higher order outer solutions without solving the second order inner equation explicitly.
