Structural Study of Vitreous and Crystalline PbO-SiO_2 System by Raman Spectroscopy

Raman spectra of PbO-SiO_2 glasses have been measured and compared with reflectance spectra in infrared region. The Raman spectrum of 2PbO・SiO_2 glass, moreover, was compared with that of crystal of the same composition. It was seen that the Raman band in frequency region from 800 to 1100cm^<-1> consisted of five peaks near 890, 930, 970, 1030 and 1100cm^<-1> which were attributed to the SiO_4 tetrahedra with four, three, two, one non-bridging oxygen ion and with four bridging oxygens, respectively. The distributions of three kinds of non-bridging, bridging and free oxygens were calculated from the analysis of intensities of these peaks. They were in greement with those of Flood and Kapoor.
