The death rate from subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH) was analyzed using Japanese vital statistics from 1968 to 1996. A data set consisting of 266, 519 SAH-related deaths was obtained from death certificate records of this period. Age-adjusted SAH death rates remained almost constant for men (7.1 to 7.9 per 100, 000). The SAH death rates for women increased from 6.1 to 9.6 per 100, 000 between 1968 and 1991, and remained nearly constant thereafter. Differences in SAH death rates were evident between sexes and among four marital categories. Multiple regression analysis indicated that alcohol consumption was the most important factor in explaining regional variations in the SAH death rate for both sexes, while the average physician-population ratio was the second most important factor. The average yearly temperature was the third most important factor for men.
