This survey attempts to investigate the best way to support school clinical psychologists (school counselors), who are the members of the Tokyo Society for Certified Clinical Psychologists. The questionnaire survey covers 388 clinical psychologists, while letters were sent to 1328 clinical psychologists returning 167 in vain in 2005. Through this survey the author found many facts, which include their understanding of the schools they are working for, the training and learning, and the necessity of individual supervision by veteran school counselors together with their need for support by professionals other than clinical psychologists. This survey also investigated the irritations and worries they feel in their job, their experiences of supervising other school-counselors, their requirements for their supervisor and what is required of them by their colleague clinical psychologists outside schools. The experiences of this preliminary research will be the base of another nationwide investigation to be carried out this year and also next year. Furthermore, the author intends to hear directly from young clinical psychologists who began to work as school counselors in the last 3 years about their initial experiences, difficulties on the job, and need for support that cannot be investigated by questionnaires.
