The purpose of this paper is to explore the characteristics of photo format questions for listening examinations. Recent studies have demonstrated how we administer TOEIC or how we recognize the impact of TOEIC introduction. Little speculation, however, has taken place concerning the actual performance by participants in each sub-test format. In the present study, 143 third-year students attending a college of technology took 20 photograph-format questions. The results of the study showed that the students could understand at least about 50 percent of the photograph-format questions. Furthermore, the scores for the photograph-format questions were in direct proportion to the scores for the TOEIC listening section. These results indicate that the students reached an adequate level to tackle this type of questions.
