The purpose of this paper is to clarify textual features of written products by tertiary level Japanese students from the perspective of topical progression. So far little is known about the valued way of topical progression in a discourse, and this is especially true of Japanese learners of English. Three high-rated and four low-rated essays were analysed as the data of the present study. The results suggested that high-rated writers used parallel and extended parallel topical progression. Some pedagogical implications were discussed in the final part of the paper.
