• The magazine "Ie-no-hikari", oriented towards families in rural areas, covers a wide range of topics. "Ie-no-hikari" is considered to be a beneficial research resource in the analysis of the conditions of the rural area. This paper is based on articles on health hygiene in "Ie-no-hikari", and explores the situation of children from the point of health hygiene, as well as an understanding of the surroundings of the children of the village at the time, from changes in the contents of articles on "frail children". The results of my analysis are summarized as follows : 1)The importance of these articles on health hygiene could be seen through their frequent references within the pages of the magazine through the former Showa period. The contents of the articles varied greatly, including explanations of diseases, health insurance for mothers and children, hygiene, and problems of medical facilities. 2)By improving magazine, "Ie-no-hikari" aimed at providing beneficial information to its readers. However, it was difficult for the readers to realize much of the information due to economical reasons. 3)In the rural areas, there were many problems associated with children's environment such as bad living conditions, heavy manual labor, lack of knowledge on hygiene, numerous superstitions, and substandard medical facilities. Such poor environmental conditions constantly exerted a bad influence on the children. 4)As time passed, the focus of the articles changed, and as a result, the viewpoint of the articles towards children also changed. This is clearly shown in the changes in the articles describing "frail children". 5)During wartime, rural health sanitation issues could be viewed as a national crisis. Health problems of children were directly linked to the country's war potential.
